Tue, 10 Jun 2025 Sizewell C nuclear plant gets £14bn go-ahead from government

The chancellor calls it a "landmark decision" but critics say the government will regret the move.
Facility will be UK's biggest nuclear building programme in a generation, according to Chancellor Rachel Reeves. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband says investment is necessary to tackle climate crisis and achieve low-carbon energy goals. Project has faced opposition from pressure group Stop Sizewell C, who say ministers have not been transparent about costs. Sizewell C will take at least 10 years to complete, with Hinkley Point C in Somerset already experiencing significant delays and cost overruns. Government insists nuclear power is crucial part of plans to eliminate fossil fuels from UK energy grid by 2030.
