Tue, 10 Jun 2025 Sizewell C pledged to lower bills but will take at least 10 years

Sir Keir Starmer says the development of Sizewell C on the Suffolk coastline will create 10,000 jobs over the next decade.
The project is expected to generate enough power for six million homes and will have a lifespan of 60 years once operational. However, building a nuclear power station is a huge engineering and financial project, with eight out of nine existing UK nuclear reactors set to close by the end of this decade. Critics argue that the cost of Sizewell C is still unclear, with industry sources estimating it could be double the £20 billion price tag quoted by the company building the plant. The government has said Sizewell will "bring down bills for millions of people across the country" and ensure energy prices are not controlled by other countries, as the UK currently relies on imported gas to meet its power needs. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the project was a "blank cheque", but he wants to invest in the future, stating "China [and] France are doing this, and I want to be right up there with them". A final decision on the funding model will be taken by the government later in the summer.
