Wed, 11 Jun 2025 Group given £1.5m to redistribute surplus food

Grants of more than £13m will go to 12 UK food charities to feed people in need.

* A £13.6m grant has been awarded to 12 charities in England, including Food in Community CIC from Devon.
* The funding will help redistribute over 19,000 tonnes of surplus food that would otherwise go to waste.
* Food in Community CIC plans to expand its gleaning operations and create jobs and volunteering opportunities on farms.
* The organisation will also increase the amount of locally produced food supplied to charities, community groups, and a community cafe it runs.
* Farmers have been supportive of the initiative, allowing volunteers access to their land to pick surplus produce.
* The Tackling Food Surplus at the Farm Gate scheme aims to boost relationships between farmers and charities.
* Waste Minister Mary Creagh said the funding will help tackle food poverty and reduce waste in England.
