More than 100 protestors demonstrate on Saturday against above-inflation electricity price rises.
Over 100 protesters gathered outside Guernsey Electricity Limited's (GEL) head office to demonstrate against price rises that have left some islanders struggling to pay their bills. The government-owned electricity company will increase its prices from July, with customers facing above-inflation increases.
Pensioner Katina Jones, 70, said she already cuts back on her energy usage by turning off the lights and using only off-peak hours, but still finds it difficult to afford her bill. Many of her friends are forced to stay in bed or use blankets for warmth because they cannot afford their heating bills.
Other protesters, including Jayne Lesbirel, 65, who used to work for GEL's predecessor, said the company's reasons for increasing prices, such as historic underinvestment, were "just an excuse" and that it was due to having a monopoly.
Mandy Moriarty, 68, criticized the standing charge, which is rising to over £85, saying it should be based on how much electricity each household uses. She fears she will have to turn off her heating altogether if prices continue to rise, leading to dampness in her home.
GEL said it understands the concerns of islanders and has worked hard to keep this year's price increase as low as possible. However, the company's spokesperson admitted that the utility is "absolutely aware" of the impact on customers already struggling with living costs.
Protest organizer Myles Duquemin argued that electricity is a basic human right and should not be treated as a luxury. He also criticized the standing charge, saying it is unfair that everyone pays the same regardless of their household size or usage.
GEL said it would review its charging structure to make it more sustainable for customers who place a lower strain on the island's electricity network. However, protesters are calling for immediate action and a reduction in prices.
