Wed, 18 Jun 2025 Millions more on benefits to get £150 off energy bills

The criteria has changed so 2.7m more people will get the money automatically knocked off their bills.

* The government is changing the rules on who qualifies for the Warm Home Discount, doubling the number of households that will get £150 off their energy bills.
* Anyone on means-tested benefits will automatically receive the discount, regardless of property size or type.
* 2.7 million more homes will be eligible for the discount, including almost a million households with children.
* The government says any increase in energy bills to cover the cost of expanding the scheme will be cancelled out by savings made from cutting energy company expenditure and dealing with problem debt.
* Energy companies will pay for and distribute the £150 discount to people's bills across England, Scotland, and Wales.
* Some experts say the scheme still leaves out those on non-means tested benefits who are most at risk of fuel poverty.
