Thousands of households will now not face disruption to hot water and heating, the government says
* The government has announced a "cautious and targeted phase out" of Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) meters, which will start on a smaller scale.
* Affected households and businesses will be contacted by suppliers "well ahead of time".
* Suppliers will replace RTS meters with smart meters in most cases.
* About 314,000 households still use RTS meters, including about one third in Scotland.
* The original deadline for switching off the meters was June 30, but it has been postponed due to concerns that many households would lose heating or hot water.
* Fuel poverty campaigners have welcomed the decision, but are calling for a clear plan and reassurances that customers will not be left without heating or hot water.
* Regulator Ofgem is working with suppliers to ensure that customers are protected during the phased shutdown of RTS meters.
* Industry group Energy UK says installation rates have increased significantly in recent weeks, but urges customers to engage with their supplier to book an appointment.
