Thu, 19 Jun 2025 'Crumbling' hospitals, schools and courts to get funding boost

The announcements on Thursday focussed on what the Chief Secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones called a "soaring maintenance backlog".

* The UK government has pledged £9bn per year over 10 years to fix and replace "crumbling" hospitals, schools, courts, and other buildings.
* The total investment will be £725bn, with £500m going towards environmental planning reforms, £8bn for flood defences, and £1bn for repairing roads and bridges.
* Almost £39bn will be spent on affordable homes, and £15.6bn on regional transport projects.
* A list of major projects, including new roads and rail lines, is expected to be published in mid-July, along with a map showing the locations of the projects.
* The government has also announced plans for public-private partnerships and will report back by the autumn Budget.
* The Chancellor said that "crumbling public buildings are a sign of the decay" caused by a lack of planning and investment.
* Conservative shadow minister Richard Fuller accused the previous government of having to deal with economic disruptions, including Covid and Ukraine, which affected spending on capital projects.
