Jes Staley has been banned from holding top UK financial jobs over his links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
A UK regulator's decision to ban former Barclays boss Jes Staley from top financial jobs has been upheld by a court. Staley had challenged the ban, imposed in 2023 after he was found to have misled his employer and regulators about his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) said Staley had failed to disclose the full extent of their connection in 2019. However, the fine imposed on him has been reduced from £1.8m to £1.1m. Staley maintained that he and Epstein were not close friends, but a cache of emails showed they exchanged affectionate messages and spent time together at Epstein's properties. Staley denied knowing about Epstein's crimes, despite being in contact with him just days before his appointment as Barclays CEO was announced. The regulator found two misleading statements in a letter sent by Barclays' chair to the FCA, which suggested Staley had not had a close relationship with Epstein.
