Fri, 27 Jun 2025 UK car production plunges to 76-year low for May

Exports to the US halved as President Donald Trump's tariffs caused some UK car makers to halt shipments.

* UK car production fell by nearly a third in May, reaching its lowest level since 1949, with only 49,810 units produced.
* Exports to the US halved due to President Trump's tariffs, causing some UK car makers to halt shipments.
* Jaguar Land Rover and Aston Martin were among those affected, suspending or reducing exports.
* The drop in production was also attributed to work on transitioning factories to electric vehicle production.
* However, a new trade deal between the US and UK is expected to come into force before the end of June, cutting import taxes on 100,000 British cars per year from 25% to 10%.
* Any cars exported above this quota will still be subject to a 27.5% tax.
* The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) expressed optimism that production would recover with the new trade deal and other government initiatives supporting the industry.
