UK regulator Ofcom is consulting on more safety measures for online platforms, such as preventing screen-records of children's livestreams.
* Ofcom proposes new online safety measures, including:
+ Requiring tech platforms to prevent illegal content from going viral
+ Limiting the ability to send virtual gifts or record child livestreams
+ Mandating proactive detection of terrorist material for larger platforms
* The proposals aim to address issues such as intimate image abuse and physical harm on livestreams, with varying requirements depending on platform size and type
* Some experts say the measures are too focused on "sticking plasters" rather than comprehensive solutions, while others welcome the potential impact on child safety
* Ofcom's consultation is open until October 2025 and seeks feedback from service providers, civil society, law enforcement, and members of the public
