Sat, 05 Jul 2025 Charity warns of unprecedented food demand

A charity which gives free or cheap food to those who need it says it is struggling to meet demand.
Fareshare, a food redistribution charity, is struggling to meet demand for surplus food in Cumbria due to increased need since the Covid-19 pandemic. The charity delivered 300 tonnes of free or discounted meals to the region last year and is now seeking help from local charities and businesses to increase its operations. Naomi Winter, Fareshare coordinator, stated that they want to expand their services in Carlisle but lack the resources to do so. They aim to put six more deliveries a week into the area but currently have no space for this in their vans. The charity relies on food donations from across the country and is appealing for more supplies from local sources. Leanne Hackett, a regular user of Fareshare services, credits the charity with helping her feed herself and her five-year-old daughter. Diane Snedker also uses the service to offset rising living costs, saying it helps "get by" during difficult times. Fareshare is urging more charities and businesses in Cumbria to get involved and provide support so they can meet growing demand for their services.
