Sat, 05 Jul 2025 Not getting a summer job? Here are eight ways to change that

Grace Pickett, 18, says it's "frustrating" so many part-time jobs require previous experience.
Many young people are struggling to find part-time jobs, with some feeling that lack of experience is a major barrier. According to a 17-year-old college student from Retford, employers often require specific experience, even for entry-level positions. The student had nearly four years' experience doing a paper round but was still turned down by several companies. A recent report from the Office for National Statistics showed that fewer young people are employed while studying than in previous decades. In 2024, only around 20% of students were working part-time, compared to over 40% in 2010. To increase their chances of getting hired, experts recommend tailoring CVs and cover letters to each job application, highlighting relevant skills and experience. They also suggest using generative AI to assist with writing these documents, but warn that some companies may reject applications if they detect AI-generated content. When it comes to interviews, experts advise researching the company and role beforehand, practicing responses to common questions, and dressing appropriately for the workplace. Asking questions during the interview shows interest in the position and can also provide valuable information about the job. Some employers are now using AI-powered tools to screen CVs and cover letters, which can sometimes lead to bias or inaccurate results. However, others, such as KFC UK and Ireland, have adopted a more open approach to AI-generated content. In addition to these tips, experts emphasize that good communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential for landing part-time jobs. They also recommend seeking feedback from friends, family, or mentors to improve interview performance. Overall, finding part-time work as a young person can be challenging, but with the right approach and preparation, it is possible to increase one's chances of success.
