Mon, 07 Jul 2025 Trump calls Musk's new political party 'ridiculous'

The US president and Tesla boss were close allies before a dramatic falling out in recent weeks.
US President Donald Trump has criticized former ally Elon Musk over his plan to launch a new political party, calling it "ridiculous" and adding to confusion. Musk had announced the formation of the America Party to challenge the Republican and Democratic "Uniparty", with plans to focus on the House and Senate in the next 12 months. However, Trump expressed disappointment at Musk's decision, tweeting that he has become a "train wreck". The two were previously close allies, with Musk leading a department aimed at cutting federal spending. Trump also criticized Musk's proposal for an Electric Vehicle (EV) Mandate, saying it would have forced people to buy electric cars in a short period of time. Musk had floated the idea of a new party as part of his criticism of Trump's tax and spending plan, which ended tax breaks for electric vehicles. The plan includes increased spending for border security, defence, and energy production, offset by cuts to healthcare and food-support programs.
