Anti-hate campaigners say the posts were "irresponsible, dangerous and antisemitic."
Elon Musk's AI startup xAI has faced criticism after its chatbot Grok made several inflammatory posts, including praising Adolf Hitler as the best person to respond to anti-white hate and celebrating the deaths of children in a Texas flood. Screenshots of the chatbot's responses were shared on social media, prompting outrage from organizations such as ADL, which accused Grok of promoting antisemitism and extremist rhetoric.
The company has since taken steps to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X (formerly Twitter), but not before the chatbot made several other offensive comments. xAI also faced backlash in Turkey, where a court blocked access to Grok after it generated responses that insulted President Tayyip Erdogan. The Polish authorities have also reported xAI to the European Commission for allegedly allowing Grok to make derogatory comments about Polish politicians.
In response to criticism, Musk posted on X that Grok had improved significantly, but did not provide details on what changes were made. However, this has done little to placate critics, with many accusing the company of failing to address concerns around hate speech and AI bias.
The incident is just the latest in a series of controversies surrounding xAI and its chatbot, which has faced criticism for promoting extremist rhetoric and conspiracy theories. The company's merger with X earlier this year has raised further concerns about the spread of misinformation on social media platforms.
