The US president warned both trading partners would face additional tariffs if they retaliated.
* The EU and Mexico have expressed disappointment over Trump's threat to impose 30% tariffs on their imports from August 1.
* The EU's chief, Ursula von der Leyen, threatened to take "proportionate countermeasures" if needed, while Mexico criticized what it called an "unfair deal".
* Both the EU and Mexico want to continue negotiating with the US.
* Trump warned that if either trade partner retaliated with import duties, he would hit back by raising tariffs by a similar percentage.
* The US has imposed new tariffs on goods from Japan, South Korea, Canada, and Brazil from next month.
* The EU trade deficit with the US was $235.6bn in 2024, according to the office of the US trade representative.
* French President Emmanuel Macron said he was "in very strong disapproval" of Trump's announcement and suggested the EU plan "speeding up the preparation of credible countermeasures".
