The countermeasures were set to start on Tuesday but have been pushed back to early August.
EU's retaliatory tariffs against US exports have been delayed until early August, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Sunday. This delay comes as a response to the US President Donald Trump's initial import taxes on steel and aluminium. The EU had initially planned to impose countermeasures worth €21 billion on US goods. However, the European Commission decided to extend the suspension of these measures until August 1. Von der Leyen stated that the EU wants to negotiate a solution with the US and will use the time to prepare for potential countermeasures. EU trade ministers are set to meet in Brussels on Monday to discuss their response to the latest developments. Germany's finance minister Lars Klingbeil emphasized the need for "serious and solution-oriented negotiations" with the US, while French President Emmanuel Macron urged the European Commission to "resolutely defend European interests". The delay in retaliatory tariffs is seen as a temporary reprieve in the ongoing trade dispute between the EU and the US.
