Mon, 14 Jul 2025 Reddit starts verifying ages of users in the UK

The platform will bring in the measures from 14 July to stop under-18s looking at "certain mature content".

* Reddit will introduce age verification on its UK site from Monday, requiring users under 18 to verify their age before accessing mature content.
* The move is in compliance with new rules under the UK's Online Safety Act, which require sites showing adult material to implement "robust" age checking techniques.
* Users can verify their age through an outside firm called Persona by uploading a selfie or government-issued ID photo.
* Reddit will not retain users' photos and only keep verification status and date of birth on record.
* Other companies, including Pornhub, have also announced plans to introduce enhanced age checks ahead of the new rules coming into effect on July 25.
* Companies that fail to comply with the rules face fines of up to £18m or 10% of worldwide revenue, whichever is greater.
* Ofcom has warned other companies to follow suit and implement robust age checking techniques.
