Thu, 17 Jul 2025 UK's most powerful supercomputer comes online

The Isambard-AI supercomputer is made fully operational as the government unveils fresh AI plans.
A new supercomputer, Isambard-AI, has been fully activated in Bristol and will become part of the UK's public AI computing capacity alongside Dawn in Cambridge. The government aims to use the powerful machine for various public projects, including tackling NHS waiting lists and developing climate change solutions. This move comes as the government invests billions in so-called AI Growth Zones in Scotland and Wales. Isambard-AI has been processing data at high speeds since January, but is now operational in full. The supercomputer's advanced capabilities will allow it to analyze vast amounts of data quickly, making it a valuable resource for public projects. In addition to the new supercomputers, the government plans to expand its AI Research Resource 20-fold over the next five years, providing more opportunities for researchers and developers.
