The US tech firm behind ChatGPT say it will work with the UK government to "deliver prosperity for all".
OpenAI has partnered with the UK government to use artificial intelligence (AI) in public services, including education, defense, security, and the justice system.
The agreement gives OpenAI access to government data and allows its software to be used in various areas. Technology Secretary Peter Kyle says AI will drive economic growth in the UK.
The deal has been criticized by campaigners who oppose the unlicensed use of music and other creative content by AI systems like ChatGPT.
The text of the memorandum states that the UK and OpenAI will work together to improve understanding of AI capabilities and security risks. They also plan to develop an information sharing program and safeguards to protect the public and uphold democratic values.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says the partnership will deliver prosperity for all and transform economies through nation-building technology.
The deal comes as the UK government seeks to boost its stagnant economy, which is forecast to grow at 0.1-0.2% in the next quarter.
Similar deals have been struck with OpenAI's rivals Google and Anthropic earlier this year, and the UK government has made clear it is open to US AI investment.
The partnership raises concerns about potential copyright infringement and data protection issues, as well as the risk of providing false information or bad advice through generative AI software like ChatGPT.
