Thu, 24 Jul 2025 'Without energy price cap, our bills have spiralled'

A BBC investigation finds people using energy networks often pay more than regular customers.

* Residents pay 30% more than the Ofgem price cap rate since 2023-24
* Over 500,000 homes nationwide are connected to around 13,000 heat networks
* Estimated service charge for a maisonette in North Peckham is over £6,600 next year, with half going towards heating and hot water
* Residents say costs have tripled since moving into their properties
* Experts attribute high prices to poorly maintained older heat networks, inefficient pipes, and expensive commercial energy costs The government plans to make Ofgem the regulator for heat networks in 2026 to deliver "fairer bills and ensure networks are kept in good condition". Residents claim that the system is unfair and say they may struggle to sell their homes due to rising energy costs.
