Wed, 30 Jul 2025 Trump to hit India with 25% tariffs - plus 'penalty' for trade with Russia

The US president said the measures would take effect from from 1 August, the US deadline for a trade deal.

* The US will impose a 25% tariff on goods imported from India, starting August 1.
* Additionally, an unspecified penalty will be applied to Indian imports for buying Russian oil and weapons.
* President Donald Trump called India a friend but criticized its high tariffs as "among the highest in the world".
* India replied that it's committed to concluding a fair trade agreement with the US.
* Last year, the US had a $45.8 billion trade deficit with India.
* The US and India have been negotiating a trade deal since April, with officials from both sides sounding positive and measured.
* Agriculture and dairy are key sticking points in the negotiations.
* Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said that the agriculture sector is sensitive for India and will make sure farmers' interests are protected.
* Despite the challenges, Goyal expressed optimism about striking a deal with Washington soon.
