Wed, 30 Jul 2025 What are my rights if my flight is cancelled or delayed?

We look at the different circumstances that affect you if you're due a refund for cancelled or delayed flights.

* If your flight is cancelled, the airline must provide you with an alternative flight at no extra cost.
* You can get a full refund for any part of the ticket you have not used.
* If you still want to travel, the airline must find you an alternative flight or book you on another mode of transport if available sooner or more suitable.
* If your flight was cancelled with less than two weeks' notice, you may be able to claim compensation based on the timings of the alternative flight offered.
* The amount of compensation depends on how far you were travelling and how much notice you were given.
* Airlines must also provide assistance such as meals and accommodation if necessary, and help you get to your destination.
* If your airline is unable to arrange this, you have the right to organise it yourself and claim back the cost later.
* Keep receipts for any additional costs incurred and do not spend more than necessary.
* If your flight is delayed by more than two hours (short-haul), three hours (medium-haul) or four hours (long-haul), you are entitled to assistance such as meals, accommodation, etc.
* If you are delayed by more than five hours and no longer want to travel, you can get a full refund.
* If you booked a package holiday with an ABTA member and your flight is cancelled, you are entitled to a suitable alternative flight or a full refund.
