Wed, 06 Aug 2025 Chinese nationals charged with exporting Nvidia AI chips to China

Chuan Geng and Shiwei Yang are accused of exporting the chips from the US to China through Singapore and Malaysia.
Two Chinese nationals, Chuan Geng and Shiwei Yang, have been arrested and charged with exporting millions of dollars' worth of high-tech AI chips from the US to China without necessary licenses. The Department of Justice alleges that over three years, their company ALX Solutions shipped Nvidia's powerful H100 graphics processing units (GPUs) to China, evading export controls. Court documents reveal that ALX received payments from companies in Hong Kong and China, including a $1m payment from a Chinese firm in 2024. The shipments allegedly went through Singapore and Malaysia as transit hubs, but the company never received payment from these shipping firms. Nvidia has stated that smuggling its chips is "a nonstarter" and that even small exporters are subject to thorough review and scrutiny. If convicted, Geng and Yang could face up to 20 years in prison.
