The takeover will give Centrica greater control of liquified natural gas supplies in the UK.
Centrica, owner of British Gas, has agreed to purchase the Grain LNG facility in Kent from National Grid and private equity firm Energy Capital Partners for £1.7 billion. This move allows Centrica to expand its control over UK energy supplies. The facility, which stores liquefied natural gas (LNG), is one of the largest in the country. LNG is a type of gas that has been cooled into a liquid, making it easier to transport. The purchase comes as National Grid focuses on its electricity and gas networks rather than owning production sites. Centrica's boss Chris O'Shea describes the facility as "a key strategic asset for the UK" and essential for energy security.
