Thu, 21 Aug 2025 Tesco meal deal price rises by 25p

The move by the UK's largest supermarket is the latest example of rising food prices.

* Tesco has raised the price of its lunchtime meal deal from £3.60 to £3.85 for Clubcard holders and from £4 to £4.25 for non-Clubcard holders.
* The price hike is part of a trend of rising food prices in the UK, with food inflation at 4.9% over the past year.
* Tesco's meal deal had remained at £3 for 10 years before a previous price hike in October 2022.
* Loyalty cards are being used by supermarkets to offer customers more at lower prices and collect data on their purchasing habits.
* Some 80% of Tesco shoppers use its Clubcard scheme, with the average person having loyalty cards for three supermarkets.
* Other supermarkets, including Sainsbury's, Boots, Co-op, Superdrug, and Waitrose, have not raised their meal deal prices or have plans to do so.
* Retailers are warning that any new taxes on businesses could push up prices further for customers.
* The Bank of England expects food price inflation to peak at 5.5% by the end of the year before falling to between 2-3% in 2026.
