Thu, 28 Aug 2025 Electric cars eligible for £3,750 discount announced

The Puma Gen-E and e-Tourneo Courier are two Ford models drivers can purchase under the government scheme.

* 2 car models have been approved for the £3,750 grant: Ford's Puma Gen-E and e-Tourneo Courier
* Another 26 models will receive a £1,500 discount
* The government plans to ban new petrol and diesel cars by 2030
* Many drivers cite upfront costs as a barrier to buying an EV
* The UK has around 1.3 million electric cars but only 82,000 public charging points
* Manufacturers that use sustainable production methods will be eligible for the maximum discount
* The grant scheme is funded through a £650m scheme and will run for 3 years
* Average price of new battery electric car: £49,790 (compared to £34,225 for petrol cars)
* Sales of used cars outweigh brand new vehicles in the UK
* Transport Secretary says the grant scheme makes it "easier and cheaper" to switch to electric
* Industry experts welcome the grant but call for faster processing of applications.
