The first new game in the series in a decade - a remake - has been released, without involvement of the series creator.
The Metal Gear series, one of the best-selling game franchises in history with over 60 million copies sold, has returned with a remake of its third installment, Metal Gear Solid Delta (previously known as Snake Eater). The game was released by Konami, which had an acrimonious split with the series' creator Hideo Kojima in 2015.
Kojima's departure was reportedly due to differences over budget for the previous installment, Metal Gear Solid V, which is estimated to have cost over $80m (£59m). The game won several awards but was scaled back from its original vision. After Kojima's departure, his former studio focused on mobile and amusement market games.
Konami has since shifted its strategy to remakes of classic titles, including Castlevania and Silent Hill. This move is proving lucrative, with Elder Scrolls V: Oblivion Remastered being one of the best-selling games of the year so far. The Metal Gear Solid remake will be the first in the series without Kojima's direct involvement.
Fans of the series have praised the decision to remake Metal Gear Solid 3, citing its well-balanced gameplay and cinematic storytelling as a perfect starting point for new players. The game opens with an introduction heavily influenced by James Bond films, easing new fans into the series' unique elements.
The remake has been praised for staying true to the original, with faithful graphics and audio improvements. However, it is unlikely that Kojima himself will play the new game, having expressed a desire to move on from the series since as early as Metal Gear Solid 2.
