The digital ticketing trials will allow passengers to check in and out using a location-identifying app.
The technology uses GPS tracking on users' mobile phones to automatically charge passengers the best fare at the end of the day.
If multiple journeys are made, the government said it would calculate if a season ticket would have been cheaper.
Passengers can sign up for the trial through EMR's website and over 500 people have already done so.
Trials will also be conducted by Northern in Yorkshire from September with similar systems being used on CrossCountry services.
A digital ticketing system that removes uncertainty about fares is being tested by East Midlands Railway and Northern rail operators.
