A Swedish firm hopes that drones will open up a new market for hot food delivery.
In Norway, Swedish start-up Aviant has launched a food delivery service by drone on the island of Värmdö, near Stockholm, marking the first time such a service has been available in Scandinavia. The company aims to bridge the gap for residents in rural areas who often lack access to hot food delivery options. By using drones, Aviant can reach isolated communities and provide a convenient service at a comparable cost to car or bike delivery.
The service is currently limited to 10 items per week during its beta phase but plans to scale up as the year progresses. Aviant's technology uses insulated containers to keep food warm for up to 10 minutes, ensuring that it arrives hot even in winter months.
Aviant co-founder and CEO Lars Erik Fagernæs hopes that this pilot service will pave the way for a full-scale rollout across Scandinavia, where many communities face similar challenges. The company has identified around 40 potential locations across the region and plans to expand over the next two years.
Aviant is not alone in exploring drone delivery services. UK firm Skyports has also tested the waters with a successful school meal delivery service on the Orkney islands and has since launched a service with Royal Mail, but both companies face significant challenges, including high costs and regulatory hurdles.
