The move is in response to a lower court ruling that some tariffs did not fall within the president's mandate.
* President Trump has asked the US Supreme Court to overturn a lower court decision that found many of his tariffs were illegal.
* A divided US Court of Appeals ruled 7-4 that the tariffs imposed by Trump did not fall within his mandate and that setting levies was "a core Congressional power".
* The case could upend Trump's economic and foreign policy agenda and force the US to refund billions in tariffs.
* The lower court ruling, which has been put on hold during the appeal process, also applies to tariffs imposed on Canada, Mexico, and China.
* If the Supreme Court justices deny the review, the ruling will take effect on October 14.
* Lawyers representing small businesses challenging the tariffs are confident they will win the case.
