Fri, 05 Sep 2025 Trump signs order to cut tariffs on Japanese cars to 15%

The formalisation of a deal that was announced in July eases uncertainty for Japan's motor industry giants.
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order lowering tariffs on Japanese car imports from 27.5% to 15%. The deal, announced in July, also sees Japan committing to invest $550bn in US projects and open its economy to American goods. Japan has agreed to buy $8bn worth of US goods annually, including agricultural products and fertilizers. Tokyo will gradually increase purchases of US-grown rice by 75%, a concession it previously resisted. The deal aims to reduce the US trade deficit with Japan and provide breakthrough openings for US businesses.
