Mon, 08 Sep 2025 Free school uniform shop moves to cope with demand

Second Chance says it has a bigger store after being "inundated" with parents asking for support.
A community shop in Sunderland has expanded into a larger premises due to increasing demand from families struggling with school uniform costs. Second Chance CIC offers free second-hand uniforms and collects donations from the public. The group's director, Wendy English, said they can now give out up to 200 items per week, but still believes that schools should remove all branded items to make a bigger difference for families. The community shop has received grants worth thousands of pounds to purchase new clothing. On average, 20 families use the service each day.
