Mon, 08 Sep 2025 UK launches defence growth strategy to try to boost jobs

The government anticipates that up to 50,000 new defence jobs could be created by 2035.

* £250m investment in five local economies (Cardiff, Belfast, Glasgow, Sheffield and Plymouth)
* Aim to create jobs and fuel growth
* Defence spending to lift to 2.5% of GDP by 2027, with ambition to reach 3% in next decade
* UK recently won £10bn contract to supply Norwegian navy with new warships (Type 26 frigates) built at Glasgow shipyards
* Up to 50,000 jobs could be created by 2035 as a result of increased spending
* Defence industrial strategy includes public and private partnerships in areas such as Barrow, Cumbria (nuclear submarines)
* Deals will include regeneration of High Street, building homes, and improving transport links
* Strategic defence review made 62 recommendations to fill gaps and boost investment
