He has accused the paper of defamation and libel, saying it served as a "mouthpiece" for Democrats.
US President Donald Trump has announced plans to sue the New York Times for $15 billion over alleged defamation and libel. Trump claims that the newspaper has been allowed to "freely lie, smear, and defame" him for too long and that this will no longer be tolerated. The lawsuit is being filed in Florida, where Trump has strong support.
Trump's criticism of the New York Times centers around its endorsement of Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, which he describes as a "mouthpiece for the Radical Left Democrat Party". He also accuses other media outlets and TV programs of "smearing" him through document and visual alteration.
The lawsuit marks the latest development in Trump's long-standing feud with the New York Times. The newspaper has dismissed Trump's claims as baseless, calling them an attempt to stifle independent reporting. The paper's spokesperson stated that the lawsuit "has no merit".
In related news, Trump has also settled lawsuits against ABC News and Paramount's CBS News for multimillion-dollar payouts in recent months. He has also launched a case against the Wall Street Journal over its reporting on the Epstein scandal.
This is not the first time Trump has sought to sue the New York Times, having previously filed a lawsuit in 2021 that was dismissed by a judge due to lack of merit.
