The event comes as Meta faces ongoing scrutiny over the impact of its products, particularly on children.
Meta has introduced new smart glasses powered by AI technology, expanding its bet on wearable tech as a must-have accessory. Mark Zuckerberg announced partnerships with Ray-Ban and Oakley to develop the devices, which include a neural wristband for hands-free tasks.
The Meta Ray-Ban Display features a full-color screen in one lens, allowing users to conduct video calls and see messages. It also includes a 12-megapixel camera. Zuckerberg sees the smart accessories as a key platform for integrating Meta AI into people's lives.
Analysts say that smart glasses may be more successful than Meta's Metaverse project, but convincing non-owners of the benefits will be crucial. The company has sold around two million pairs of smart glasses since entering the market in 2023, with the new Display model available this month for $799.
Meta is investing heavily in AI infrastructure and talent acquisition, aiming to develop "superintelligence" that can out-think humans. However, the company faces ongoing scrutiny over its products' impact on children, including allegations of covering up potential harms from virtual reality products.
Despite these challenges, Meta's smart glasses are expected to gain traction due to their ease of use and affordability. The company is also expanding its AI operations with massive investments in data centers and talent acquisition.
