Thu, 18 Sep 2025 Workers across France strike over budget cut plans

The widespread walkouts come less than a fortnight after the government collapsed over a proposed budget.
1 million people protested across France on Thursday, with organizers claiming that many more participated than the 500,000 estimated by the interior ministry. Violent clashes broke out in several cities, including Lyon, Nantes and Paris. Police deployed tear gas and shields to disperse crowds after protesters damaged businesses and buildings in the capital. Transport was severely disrupted, with metro lines shut down in Paris and roads blocked across the country. Students and teachers joined the strike action, with 98% of pharmacies also closing their doors. More than 300 people were arrested during the protests, which called for an end to budget cuts and higher taxes on the wealthy. The strikes came after a new prime minister was appointed last week, sparking outrage among trade unions who claim that Macron's policies favor the rich at the expense of public services.
