Fri, 19 Sep 2025 Spike in donations from people leaving island

Charity says it has seen more donations and more people visiting its shop.
Jersey charity shop Care and Relief for the Young (CRY) has seen an increase in donations due to people leaving the island, with a significant demand for house clearances. The charity is participating in Second Hand September, a campaign promoting reuse over new purchases. The shop's general manager Elk Hargreaves said it was exceptionally busy, receiving many donations and doing more house clearances than usual. The shop needs more volunteers to help manage the increased workload, with Ms Hargreaves commenting that "it would be lovely if we had some more volunteers". There is growing interest from young people looking for second-hand goods, particularly vintage clothes, due to their popularity among this age group. Many customers are visiting the shop because of cost-of-living pressures, seeking affordable items within their price range.
