There has been strong opposition against the airport wanting to use its northern runway.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has approved plans for a second runway at London Gatwick Airport, despite long-standing opposition from campaigners and groups worried about the impact on the surrounding area.
Key points include:
* The £2.2bn project involves moving the current Northern Runway 12 metres to bring it into regular use, as well as extending terminal size
* The airport expects passenger numbers to rise from 40 million to up to 80 million per year
* The second runway would be used for short-haul flights, with capacity freed up on the main runway for long-haul services
* The government says the project will create jobs and boost the local economy, while critics argue it will exacerbate air pollution and climate emissions
