Mon, 22 Sep 2025 Apple steps up war of words with European regulators

‘Unfair’ EU rules are delaying features for European users, the tech giant says.
Apple claims that EU regulators are unfairly challenging its closed ecosystem, which provides a "magical and innovative experience" for users. The company argues that complying with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) would compromise user safety, security, and quality. However, the EU sees Apple's walled garden as anti-competitive behavior that restricts rival products from working seamlessly with iPhones. The DMA requires Apple to allow other devices to work with iPhones, receive notifications on third-party smartwatches, and send content via AirDrop. Consumer advocate Sébastien Pant says this is beneficial for consumers, allowing them to choose between different devices and ensuring compatibility. But Apple has expressed concerns that opening up its ecosystem would undermine user experience and compromise security. The company has delayed releasing some features in the EU due to these regulations, citing the need for extra engineering work.
