A growing number of young adults now say the rising cost of running a home means they can't afford their own place.
A 21-year-old woman, Leoni Clancey, and her boyfriend had saved up for years to move out of their parents' homes and into a rental property together. However, nine months later, they were forced to return home due to the high cost of living expenses, which had depleted all their savings.
According to industry experts, nearly 9 in 10 young adults living with their parents in the UK would face costs equivalent to almost half their income if they moved out. This is a growing trend, with statistics showing that between 2011 and 2021, the number of adults living with parents increased from 4.2 million to 4.9 million.
A recent report by the Skipton Group found that nearly 98% of adults living with their parents could not afford to pay the average first-time buyer price for a house in their area. Even if they could afford a deposit, nine in 10 would face mortgage or rent payments, council tax, utility bills, insurance, and maintenance costs that would use up nearly half of their income.
Experts warn that rising living costs are making it increasingly difficult for young people to afford to buy or rent their own homes, with many being forced to move back home due to financial constraints. The report highlights the need for more social housing and affordable options for those on lower incomes.
Government initiatives aim to address the issue by increasing the minimum wage, building 1.5 million new homes, and introducing long-term rent controls. However, experts warn that the interest rate set by the Bank of England will continue to affect mortgage and loan rates, making it challenging for young people to get onto the property ladder.
As Leoni continues to live with her parents, she is now saving up specifically for a deposit to buy their own place, as well as covering costs. Experts stress that a combination of more affordable housing options and financial support is needed to help young people achieve independence and homeownership.
