Wed, 24 Sep 2025 Children to be auto-enrolled for free school meals

The new system will go live in September 2026, Cornwall Council said.
Cornwall Council has introduced automatic enrolment for free school meals, which will come into effect from September 2026. Families who are eligible for Free School Meals will no longer need to apply. The decision was made after an annual report revealed over 27,000 children and young people in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly were growing up in relative poverty. According to the council, automatic enrolment is expected to put £900,000 directly back into family budgets every year and bring nearly £2 million in additional Pupil Premium funding into schools.
