Wed, 24 Sep 2025 TikTok child data protection inadequate, Canadian privacy officials say

TikTok says it will introduce measures to "strengthen our platform" although it disputes some of the findings.

* Hundreds of thousands of Canadian children use TikTok each year, despite the app's claim that it is not intended for people under 13.
* TikTok has collected sensitive personal information from a large number of Canadian children and used it for online marketing and content targeting.
* The data collected by TikTok from its users, including children, can have "harmful impacts" on youth when used to target ads and content.
* TikTok has agreed to enhance measures to stop children using the platform and to more clearly indicate how their data could be used, in response to the investigation.
* The company disputes some of the findings of the investigation and says it will introduce new measures to "strengthen its platform for Canadians".
