Thu, 25 Sep 2025 PM 'remains committed' to Northern Powerhouse Rail

Sir Keir said he wanted to "get it right" following the unravelling of HS2 plans.

* The Prime Minister has reaffirmed his government's commitment to Northern Powerhouse Rail, despite recent delays and cost concerns.
* The project aims to improve journey times between northern towns and cities, including those in Yorkshire, through infrastructure upgrades and new lines.
* £3.5bn has been invested into the upgrade of the existing line, announced in the last budget.
* Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said getting the project right is more important than rushing it, citing the scrapped HS2 northern phases as an example.
* He also spoke about his party's efforts to address issues in Yorkshire, saying people need to choose between "patriotic national renewal" with Labour or the "politics of grievance" offered by Reform.
