Fri, 26 Sep 2025 Teaching union demands action over 'failing' pension scheme

The union says payment delays from the Teachers' Pension Scheme have left many in financial disarray.
A primary school head teacher, Joanne Hurst, shared her personal experience of struggling with payment delays, which has caused significant financial and emotional distress. She expressed frustration over conflicting advice from the pension scheme's staff when trying to resolve issues. The NAHT believes that a 2018 legal judgment, which found younger members of government schemes were discriminated against, contributed to the current problems. However, they also pointed out that there may be a shortage of capacity within the pension scheme team as another factor contributing to the delays. In response, the DfE stated that it understands the frustration caused by the issues and is working closely with Teachers' Pensions to resolve them as soon as possible.
