If no deal is struck by the end of Tuesday, the US will have its first shutdown in nearly seven years.
The government services that will be affected include:
* Food assistance programme
* Federally-funded pre-school
* Issuing of student loans
* Food inspections
* Operations at national parks
Some essential workers, including:
* Border protection agents
* Medical staff in hospitals
* Law enforcement officers
* Air-traffic controllers
Will continue to work during a shutdown, but may not be paid until it is resolved.
A prolonged shutdown could have secondary impacts on the US economy and has happened several times before, including three during Trump's first term.
