The image-hosting platform - which is widely used to make memes - was facing a fine over its use of children's data.
* Imgur has blocked users in the UK from accessing its platform, citing "content not available in your region" error message.
* The move comes after the UK's data watchdog, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), notified MediaLab AI, Imgur's parent company, of plans to fine the platform over concerns about age checks and child data protection.
* A help article on Imgur's US website reveals that access to the platform will be restricted for UK users from September 30, 2025, with no option to log in, view content, or upload images.
* The ICO launched an investigation into Imgur in March over its compliance with UK data protection laws and children's code, which requires platforms to protect children online and minimize data collection.
* Imgur's decision to block UK users is described as a "commercial decision" by the company, but some speculate it may be related to compliance with child safety duties under the Online Safety Act.
* Other services run by MediaLab, such as Kik messenger, remain available in the UK and have implemented age assurance measures to comply with the Online Safety Act.
