George Sutherland is one of a number of volunteers singled out in a speech by Sir Keir Starmer.
79-year-old George Sutherland, a volunteer at Telford Crisis Support, was praised by Prime Minister candidate Sir Keir Starmer during his Labour Party conference speech. Sutherland has been volunteering for 10 years and said demand for food bank services has increased significantly due to rising living costs. He described the experience as "one of the proudest moments of my life" and emphasized that the recognition was not just about him, but also about the work of Telford Crisis Support. Sutherland said he felt humbled by the praise and noted that he is just one of many volunteers who are dedicated to helping those in need. Telford's MP Shaun Davies praised Sutherland on social media, describing him as "one of the best of us" and highlighting his commitment to the community. In response to the praise, Sutherland emphasized the importance of not feeling ashamed to ask for help when needed.
