He said the shutdown could be an opportunity to "clear out dead wood", giving no hint of concessions to Democrats.
President Trump says he and his budget director will determine which "Democrat Agencies" to cut as the US government shutdown enters its third day. He suggests Republicans should take advantage of the opportunity to "clear out dead wood", but offers no concessions to Democratic demands for healthcare subsidies.
The blame game continues between Republicans and Democrats, with each side accusing the other of failing to keep federal agencies open. Hundreds of thousands of federal workers are staying home without pay, while others continue to work unpaid. Some federal attractions have closed, including museums in Washington and New York, but others like the Statue of Liberty remain open.
Analysts say neither side is likely to budge unless pressure from everyday Americans forces them to do so. The shutdown has caused significant disruptions, with thousands of federal workers on unpaid leave and some government services grinding to a halt.
The US Office of Management and Budget (OMB) director will work with the President to determine which government activities should continue and which can be halted. The OMB will then direct federal agencies on which employees to place on furlough, or unpaid leave.
Lawmakers are expected to try again on Friday afternoon to pass legislation funding the government, but it remains unclear whether they will reach an agreement. Democrats want a renewal of healthcare subsidies for low-income individuals, while Republicans want to pass a funding measure without any additional measures attached.
