Zack Polanski sets out a new direction for the Green Party in his first conference speech as leader.
Polanski's speech focused on addressing the country's deep-seated inequality, pointing to rising homelessness, tenant worries over rent, and families struggling to pay bills. He argued that the country's problems were rooted in an economic model built on austerity and privatisation, but promised the Green Party would "break the shackles of poverty and hardship" through policies like universal free childcare and rural bus routes. Polanski also highlighted his party's commitment to social justice, defending refugees and migrants as welcome guests in the UK. He blamed a politics that divides people rather than billionaires for the country's problems, declaring: "This is a nation of neighbours." He spoke about the impact of wealth inequality on the environment, stating "You can not be an effective environmentalist without talking about the deep inequality in our society". Polanski also addressed the issue of Israeli-Palestinian conflict, calling for an end to arms sales and intelligence sharing with Israel. The Green Party has seen significant growth under Polanski's leadership, winning 74 seats in local council elections and a 20% rise in membership to 80,000.
