Sales of fully electric or hybrid vehicles made up more than half of all new car registrations in the UK last month.
* Electric vehicle sales in the UK hit a record high last month, with pure battery electric vehicles (BEV) growing by almost a third to 72,779.
* Plug-in hybrid cars saw even faster growth in sales.
* Fully electric or hybrid vehicles made up over half of all new car registrations in the UK last month.
* The majority (71.4%) of BEVs were bought by businesses or for fleet use, but private buyers are increasing and now make up 22.1% of new cars registered so far this year.
* Industry investment in electric vehicles is "paying off" according to SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes.

* New vehicle registrations reached 312,887 in September, a record high for the month.
